Costco Price Adjustment Policy in Canada: The Complete Guide

What it is The 30-day window In-warehouse process Costco.ca process What's excluded Why people miss it How to catch every drop FAQ

The short version: If a Costco item you bought drops in price within 30 days, Costco will refund you the difference — but they won't tell you it happened. You have to notice, and you have to ask.

Most Costco members have no idea this exists. It's not hidden exactly — Costco Canada publishes the policy for warehouse items and a separate one for Costco.ca orders — but nothing in-store points you to it, no app reminds you, and no email tells you a price dropped. So the money just sits there, unclaimed, until the 30 days run out.

The 30-day window

The rule is simple: if the price on an item drops within 30 calendar days of your purchase, you can request the difference back. A few details matter:

  • Calendar days, not business days. Weekends and holidays count toward the 30.
  • The clock starts at purchase — for online orders, that's the order date, not the delivery date.
  • Same item, same warehouse pricing. The adjustment applies to identical items at the price Costco is currently charging.

In-warehouse purchases

If you bought the item in a physical Costco warehouse, the process is manual and in-person:

  1. Notice the price has dropped (Costco won't tell you — more on that below).
  2. Bring your receipt, or your membership card if you don't have it — Costco can look up eligible purchases by membership.
  3. Go to the Membership Counter and ask for a price adjustment on the item.
  4. Staff verify the current price and the purchase date, then refund the difference to your original payment method.

Costco.ca online orders

For anything ordered through Costco.ca, the process is self-serve:

  1. Go to your order details on Costco.ca.
  2. Look for the Request a Price Adjustment option on the eligible item.
  3. Submit the request — Costco says it typically takes about 5–7 business days to process as a credit.

What's excluded

The policy has real limits, and it's worth knowing them before you go in expecting a refund:

  • Item must still be in stock at the lower price (excluding demo/floor models) when you request the adjustment.
  • Promotional windows matter — the request has to fall within the valid dates of the current price or promotion.
  • Costco can decline or change the policy at any time. It's a courtesy, not a legal guarantee, and store-level discretion varies.
  • This isn't price matching. Costco doesn't match other retailers' prices — only its own price drops on the same item.
  • Big blowout events (e.g. Black Friday-style one-off sales) are often treated as exceptions rather than a standing lower price.

Why almost everyone misses it

The policy isn't secret, but it's built to be missed. There's no notification system, no price-history page, and no reminder before your 30 days expire. Checking manually means remembering exactly what you paid for dozens of items, then re-checking Costco's current price on each one, repeatedly, for a month — which is exactly the kind of task nobody keeps up with.

PriceBack scans your Costco receipt once, then quietly tracks every item's price for the full 30-day window — and tells you the moment one drops.

How to catch every eligible drop

Two realistic options:

  • Manually: Keep every receipt, note the purchase date, and periodically re-check Costco's current price on each item you bought — before day 30.
  • Automatically: Scan the receipt once with PriceBack and let it track prices daily for you. When something drops inside the window, you get a notification with everything you need to bring to the Membership Counter or submit online.

Either way, the core habit is the same: know what you paid, and check back before the window closes. See our companion guide for the exact wording and steps to use at the counter: How to Get a Price Adjustment at Costco, Step by Step.

Frequently asked questions

Does Costco Canada have a price adjustment policy?

Yes — Costco Canada refunds the difference between what you paid and a lower current price on the same item, if you request it within 30 days of purchase, in-warehouse or on Costco.ca.

How long do I have to request a Costco price adjustment?

30 calendar days from the purchase date. For online orders, that's the order date, not the delivery date.

Does Costco automatically refund me if a price drops?

No — nothing about it is automatic. You have to notice the drop yourself and request the adjustment, either at the Membership Counter or through Costco.ca's price-adjustment form.
